Carowinds Theme Park at North Carolina
The Carowinds theme park is much like a corporate park that contains a wide variety of rides and coasters. Located in Charlotte, North Carolina and Fort Mill, South Carolina, the Carowinds theme park has a number of exciting and fun roller coasters, as well as attractions for the children.
When visiting the theme park, tourists are advised to try Carowinds’ Top Gun and Borg Assimilator. There are also other cookie-cutter variations of rides at the park that can be seen at the former Paramount theme parks. If you enter the Carowinds theme part from the front gates, first try the Bord Assimilator and make your way counter clockwise. If you enter from the back, on the other hand, ride the Top Gun and continue to tour the park clockwise.
History of the Carowinds Theme Park
The Carowinds theme park is located at a 112-acre of land. The park opened to the public in March 31, 1973 with an estimated cost of $30 million. Originally, the owners of the park envisioned the Carowinds as a part of a huge resort area that would include a shopping center, hotels, a golf course, and a football stadium.
However, similar to a number of theme parks across the United States, traffic at the theme park severely lessened due to the oil crisis in 1973. Hence, the plans for the resort that would have surrounded the whole park were abandoned. Nevertheless, the stock holders and owner of the theme park continued to operate the park until 1974.
In 1993, Paramount Communications purchased the property, which caused the Carowinds theme park to join the Paramount Parks family. In the same year, the park was renamed to Paramount’s Carowinds and was purchased along with Paramount by Viacom in the year 1994.
The name of the park, Carowinds, was derived from the original name of the park. The name itself was derived from the combination of Carolina and winds, wherein the Carolinas was the place the park was built and winds as the winds that blow across the two states. However, the park changed over the years and the original themes and attractions depicting the cultural aspect of Carolina were dropped in favor of more generic movie themes and television.
Attractions at the Carowinds Theme Park
The Carowinds theme park opens during the later part of March and closes during November, usually after the theme park’s Halloween event called the Scarowinds. Visitors of the Carowinds theme park will enjoy a number of thrilling rides including the park’s very own Afterburn, which was previously known as the Top Gun.
In the Carolina Cyclone, passengers will experience two thrilling and daring loops and corkscrews. This Arrow Dynamics coaster is located at the Carolina Boardwalk section of the park.
Another roller coaster created by the Arrow Dynamics is the Carolina Goldrusher. It is also located in Boardwalk, the same as the Cyclone and is the foremost roller coaster to cross state lines.
The Carowinds theme park is also child-friendly with several areas and rides dedicated for children’s amusement. The park contains a Nickelodeon Central where children can ride and try attractions that are themed to their favorite Nickelodeon celebrity. Some attractions at the area include the Backyardigans Swing-A-Long, Danny Phantom’s Phantom Flyers, Dora the Explorer’s Azul Adventure, and the Flying Dutchman’s Revenge, to name a few.
